What's the difference between a sarong and a pareo?

What's the difference between a sarong and a pareo?

Their may origins differ however, both are made from a single piece of rectangular fabric, often more lightweight and sheer making them easier to style and drape.  Both are tied in a knot to secure in place.  In the western world they have been fashioned and are typically worn as beachwear over swimwear.

Sarongs

Sarongs originated from Southeast Asia and are typically worn around the waist, often rectangular or triangular in shape.  Generally have a rolled or decorative hem and are smaller than pareos.

Pareos

Pareos originated from Tahiti, they are larger than a sarong and can be wrapped around the body, typically the upper body and will extend down below the knees.  Due to their size, they can be styled in many ways and offers more coverage than a sarong.

In both cases, the most common fabrics used are cotton, silk and polyester.   Colourful and fun, their is no end to their function as we get creative and extend their use beyond beach and poolside!
